It's been a decade since the Volvo XC90 appeared on Quebec roads in its current form. Along the way, it has evolved with new technologies and a slight restyling that has kept it in step with the times. However, with Volvo's electrification targets revised downwards, the Volvo XC90 needed a new design to remain relevant in the range alongside the Volvo EX90. In this article, discover the new...
At the beginning of 2019, the Polestar brand (a subsidiary of the Volvo Group) launched its 1st electric vehicle with the Polestar 2; a vehicle with cutting-edge and sporty styling in line with Polestar optimizations for thermal vehicles. For the year 2022, it is the turn of the Polestar 3 to conquer the Canadian market with similarities to the new Volvo EX90 - the differentiation with Polestar products becomes less obvious.
So, between the SPA2 platform, the LiDAR technology and the electric range, we explain the differences between the two electric vehicles from Volvo.
EX90 & Polestar 3: a new SPA2 platform, electrification and LiDAR technology in common!
The announcement of the EX90 and the Polestar 3 within a few days of each other is not a coincidence; these two vehicles are the first of a new SPA2 platform that will allow the Swedish brand to develop its range of electric vehicles.
You will find as similarities the LiDAR technology - developed in collaboration with the company Luminar - as well as a 111kw battery that allows both vehicles to show a range on a single charge between 560km and 610km.
A different target clientele
But despite the technological similarities between the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3, the two vehicles are not aimed at the same customers.
In fact, if Volvo decided to create a special unit for Polestar, it is with the sole aim of conquering a clientele coming from electric sports brands like Audi, Porsche or BMW. At Polestar, the focus is more on the driving experience than on the family concept.
Thus, the differences will be in the equipment: the Polestar 3 is equipped with high-performance Brembo brakes, a rigid chassis that reduces roll in turns, Torque Vectoring offering more handling and a sportier look.
On the other hand, the Volvo EX90 focuses on safety, comfort and space by offering 7 real seats as well as two infrared eye-tracking cameras that detect any passenger abnormalities (distraction, fatigue).
Finally, the Volvo EX90 is a true driving computer that can receive updates over the years while connecting to your home or your smartphone.
