Announcements are happening one after the other at Volvo Cars Saint-Léonard. After the arrival of the new 100% electric Volvo C40 and the stylistic evolution of the Volvo XC40, it is now the turn of the Swedish brand's flagship to undergo a drastic change.
After several announcements about the XC90's replacement, Volvo finally introduces its new EX90; a 100% electric version that combines comfort, safety and new technologies that will reduce fatal accidents by 20%!
Even if all the information have not yet been revealed, you will find the new features in this article that will make this Volvo EX90 2024 a vehicle of choice for large families who care about the environment.
Scandinavian style in the Volvo genes
Although it takes its shape from the Volvo XC90, the EX90 incorporates styling cues specific to future electric vehicles. The T-shape (aka "Thor's hammer") is now a headlamp unit that features sophisticated lighting using no less than 1.3 million pixels. Also, the main grille disappears for a smoother surface, confirming its electric purpose.
As for the interior, Volvo is further refining the style of the dashboard by using sustainable recycled materials.
"The Volvo EX90 contains about 15 percent recycled steel, 25 percent recycled aluminum as well as 48 kg of recycled plastic and biomaterials, which equals about 15 percent of the total amount of plastic used in the car, the highest proportion in a Volvo car to date."
Finally, it offers 655 liters of trunk space in the 5-seat version - not to mention 37 liters of storage space in the front hood. With the style of the Volvo EX90, the Swedish brand definitely wants to enter the era of electrification.
LiDAR technology: more safety outdoors ...
One of the main new features of this Volvo EX90 is the insertion of the LiDAR system, developed in collaboration with the company Luminar. Located at the top of the windshield, it allows the sensor to create a safety bubble around the vehicle, up to 250 meters away, even at night.
In other words, LiDAR is able to detect specific obstacles (human and object), estimate their size and anticipate whether they pose a danger to the vehicle's passengers.
Also, the Volvo EX90 is the first vehicle in the Volvo range to be able to benefit from 100% autonomous driving thanks to LiDAR. Want 100% autonomous driving in other environments? Thanks to its connectivity, the EX90 will receive updates that allow the vehicle to evolve technologically; like your smartphone.
... Without forgetting the interior
But safety is not limited to the exterior. Volvo has developed an in-house technology that uses cameras in the dashboard to detect moments of distraction, drowsiness or inattention. Even better, these cameras detect the presence of humans or animals in case of accidental forgetfulness.
New generation batteries which allow an increased autonomy.
Just imagine! Buying a 100% electric family car and not being able to use it to go on vacation. Pretty restrictive, isn't it?
During the presentation of the new Volvo EX90, the Swedish brand focused on the vehicle's batteries, in this case its autonomy and recharge time. In addition to having created its own batteries in-house, Volvo announced a range of 600 km on a recharge cycle. (figures to be confirmed for Canada)
You need more autonomy, quickly?
The Volvo EX90 can be recharged from 10 to 80% in less than 30 minutes thanks to the fast charging stations; ideal for long trips across Quebec. As for their power, they can reach 11 kW in alternating current and 250 kW in direct current.
Finally, the last new feature of these batteries is the bi-directional charging, which provides an additional source of energy to power your home, your electrical appliances or even another Volvo electric car.
To note: Two-way charging will be introduced at a later date in selected markets.
Other new features of the Volvo EX90
But the list of new features does not end there!
The Volvo EX90 gets an all-new 14.5-inch center screen, integrating Google services and applications: Google Maps, the Google Assistant voice assistant and Google Play.
Do you like to listen to music?
Volvo continues its collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins to bring Dolby Atmos technology to the EX90, including speakers in the headrest.
Finally, the Volvo EX90 is a highly connected vehicle that will receive updates to keep up with the times: "Your Volvo EX90 will not just be a new car, but a sophisticated smart computer on the road."
Order the Volvo EX90 : Launch versions
The Volvo EX90 will only be available with 100% electric engines, but the Volvo XC90 thermal/hybrid remains in the catalog.
Two levels of power and torque should be offered for the launch: 408 hp and 770 Nm for the "basic" Twin Motor version or 517 hp and 910 Nm for the Performance variant.
As for the price of the Volvo EX90 in Canada, it is not yet known in Canada.
