With the launch of the Volvo EX30, the Swedish brand introduces to Canadian territory a compact, urban SUV almost never seen here.
Not because it's revolutionizing the automotive genre, but because it's closer to a European vehicle than the oversized SUVs we're used to seeing on our roads.
As you'll see from the rest of this article, it's still hard to find any real competitors.
Advantages of the Volvo EX30
Despite the lack of competition on the market, the Volvo EX30 has its faults and qualities that are worth mentioning.
Scandinavian style
In terms of styling, the Volvo EX30 (like the Volvo EX90) allows the brand's designers to draw minimalist, very Scandinavian lines.
In fact, some of the Polestar 2's stylistic elements are recognizable, such as the design of the rear lights and even its taut lines.
And don't forget the themes and ambiences offered by the vehicle for that extra made-in-Sweden touch.
Google infotainment
For several years now, Volvo has been working closely with Google to integrate a range of functions natively. As a result, you can benefit from Google Assistant, Maps or Play directly from the center console.
Combined with Volvo's interface features, you get the full electric driving experience, including recharging planners when you go on vacation.
Fast charging (really fast)
Through various tests carried out in real-life conditions, the testers noted that rapid recharging from 10 to 80% could be achieved in 28 minutes, which is better than the average.
You don't need to recharge at a public charging point to achieve these figures. By directly integrating a 22kw AC socket, you can benefit from fast recharging directly at home.
Finally, to conclude on the advantages, many positive comments have been made on the driving flexibility, electric torque and overall dynamism of the vehicle, especially in its rear-wheel drive version.
Disadvantages of the Volvo EX30
However, like all vehicles on the market, the Volvo EX30 isn't perfect, especially if you use it outside these prerequisites.
The look of recycled materials
To become carbon neutral by 2030, Volvo must change its production methods.
One of the changes with the Volvo EX30 is the materials used in the interior. With around 30% of decorative elements made from recycled plastic, some long-standing Volvo customers may be surprised.
However, this is a conscious choice by Volvo, which is committed to an eco-responsible approach that respects the changes that lie ahead.
The Volvo EX30 versus the competition
Before writing this article, we thought long and hard about which vehicles could compare with the Volvo EX30. And honestly, there are only three that can compete with our vehicle on the market.
Kia Niro EV 2024
Kia Niro EV is a 204 hp all-electric SUV with a range of up to 407 km (EPA).
Avantages :
- Technology : includes a semi-automatic driving system
- Storage space : with 475 liters of storage space in the trunk and 20 liters in the compartment, there's plenty of room for the size of the vehicle
- Driving : the vehicle is well soundproofed, especially on the freeway, where very little road noise is heard
Disadvantages :
- Fast charging : With up to 88kW available, the Kia can recharge from 10 to 80% in just 45 minutes.
- Infotainment : No Google integration in the Kia. As a result, the software is rather slow compared to the Volvo EX30.
- Panoramic roof : Quite small when compared to other vehicles in its segment.
Hyundai Kona Electric
Hyundai Kona Electric 2024 has an estimated range of 420 km with its 64.8 kWh battery.
Avantages :
- Top-of-the-range services : Whether in terms of connectivity, materials or driving aids, it offers features worthy of the segment's top-of-the-range brands.
- Driving pleasure : At high or low speeds, the Kona is comfortable, quiet and even offers excellent roadholding, despite being offered with front-wheel drive as standard.
Disadvantages :
- Fast recharge speed: Like the Kia Niro, the Kona doesn't impress with its fast recharge, which can take between 45 and 50 minutes to go from 10 to 80%.
Audi Q4 E-Tron
The Audi Q4 e-tron 2024 has an estimated range of up to 415KM (EPA).
Avantages :
- Fast charging : With fast charging up to 175 kW, the Q4 can be recharged in just 28 minutes.
- Driving pleasure : comfortable, dynamic vehicle.
Disadvantages :
- Price : Higher starting price compared to other compact electric SUVs with more standard equipment.
- Poor-quality materials : Predominance of hard plastics in the cabin
- Slow software : Especially for route planning with charging station
- Checkbox options : For equipment such as semi-autonomous driving or a simple panoramic roof, the price climbs considerably.
In comparison, the Volvo EX30 offers the best of both worlds. On the one hand, it benefits from a host of standard comfort and safety features (unlike the Q4 E-Tron), while at the same time enjoying the advantages of fast charging that the Korean brands don't enjoy.
Who's the Volvo EX30 for?
Ultimately, the Volvo EX30 is a preferred choice for families looking for a secondary vehicle, or one to be used solely for city trips.
If your goal is to use it for cross-country escapades, turn your attention to the Volvo EX40 or Volvo EC40. They'll offer more electric range on the highway and more space on board.
