On our model year 2022 XC60, S60, V90 Cross Country and S90, the T5/T6 powertrains have been retitled to the B5/B6 as a result of the introduction of the new 48V mild hybrid system. The core of the 48V mild hybrid system is the ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) with an additional 13 horsepower (separate from the official 247/295-horsepower for the B5/B6).
What is a Mild Hybrid?
The mild hybrid, also known as MHEV or the integrated started generator (ISG), is a car that utilizes both a combustion engine and an electric motor to minimize CO2 emissions, improve the fuel economy and provide performance benefits. The ISG is used to 1) start the engine 2) brake or slow the car, and thereby recover brake energy that is stored in the 48V battery. This energy is then used to help boost the combustion engine when accelerating. The mild hybrid system delivers great performance benefits in everyday city driving (please view graph below).
What are the benefits?
Apart from reduced fuel consumption and lower tailpipe emissions, the mild hybrid provides a more seamless and instant take-off in your vehicle. By recuperating the brake energy your Volvo can become more effective and powerful. Nevertheless, cars with the mild hybrid system can be more affordable to purchase than a plug-in-hybrid or a pure electric car. Below you can find a list of key attributes of a mild hybrid.
